PORT ST. LUCIE — A St. Lucie West Centennial High School teacher accused of drinking and doing drugs with a student is free on bail Friday. A 17-year-old boy told St. Lucie County Sheriff’s investigators he took painkillers, drank beer and smoked “weed” with her at her house in June until they passed out on her couch.
Look, there are a lot of upsides to being a teacher. You get summers off. The hours aren’t bad. After a few years of teaching the same material you just keep giving the same homework assignments/quizzes/tests. But make no mistake, being a teacher would be about as nerve racking as anything. Kids are assholes. Assholes with no consciences. Like, I look back on all the stuff I did and think maybe I should write a few apology letters to my former teachers. I mean as a teacher you have two options when it comes with dealing with asshole kids. 1) be the asshole teacher that is a firm disciplinarian and no kid will fuck with you. Upside is obvious. Downside, no student likes you and everyone talks behind your back. And there’s option 2) be the “cool teacher.” Upside- every student likes you and wants to be in your class. Downside- you’ll be walked all over and no kid will respect you.
I totally didn’t think there was a third option: become friends with your students, essentially becoming a half teacher/half classmate. I mean how do you get in the mind of your enemy? You gotta think like your enemy. That’s all Elizabeth Hatzidakis was doing. Cracking a few beers with her 17-year-old students, popping pills, taking bong rips. Normal stuff, right Liz? Just kidding you’re wierdo. Don’t you have friends your age to get loaded with? I mean, while you’re getting charged with a felony, all these kids are gonna get is a slap on the wrist and their record expunged by the time they turn 18.
P.S. I’m trying to picture how these little get-togethers went down…
