ESPN – Mavericks owner Mark Cuban gave Derek Fisher a villain’s welcome during the 38-year-old point guard’s return to Dallas on Sunday night. “I’ll just boo him like hopefully everybody else,” Cuban said before the game.
You know why this move from Cuban is such an amazing move, because Derek Fisher is the athlete version of a front runner. The athlete front-runner is a very rare breed, one you don’t see too often. But just look at his resume. He essentially was born on third base. Kobe and Shaq basically said “Here Derek, here are three rings. Thanks for being a backup.” Then he goes off thinking he is all hot shit and signs with Golden State. The little bird thought he would leave the nest. Well, in the 2 years he spent in the bay area he didn’t do jack, and after 1 year with the Jazz he finally realized he couln’t win without Kobe. So, he took a paycut and signed with the Lakers. He went on to win two more rings and now is 1 ring behind MJ. If the story stopped there I would have ZERO beef with Fish, besides his headband-over-the-ears-look. He won his championships, he wasn’t the marquee player, and he didn’t act like it. But then after the Lakers chucked the duece up at Fish last year, his career has just taken weird turn after weird turn.
He was traded to the Rockets in March, 2012, bought out his contract, and signed with OKC. Went to the finals with the Thunder that year, who lost to LeBron and the LeBronettes. Than in the off-season he signed with the Mav’s. After playing 9 games Fish wanted out “he was granted his request to be released by the Mavericks. He said the release was driven by the injury coupled with his priority to be close to his family.” In February he re-signed with OKC, which is why Cuban is so pissed.
Confused? This is Derek Fisher. Guy told Cuban and the Mav’s his body had had enough and he wanted to be closer to his family. Then 2 seconds later he signs with the #1 team in the West and continues his career. Asshole move? Completely. What I don’t get is how he is allowed to do it. You hear about these guys who want out of a certain place, hate their city, hate their contract, hate their teammates, yadda yadda yadda. But they’re stuck. So here’s headband Fish just doing what he wants. Buying up his own contract, getting let go on purpose, signing with the #1 team. FRONT RUNNER. My dream scenario is the Thunder losing to the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs. Front-runner Fish getting bounced by the team that gave him 5 rings.
