Hardball Talk – Shredded gum brand Big League Chew will debut national packaging that will feature an active athlete — Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp — instead of the cartoon characters that have existed on more than 500 million pouches since Big League Chew first hit shelves 33 years ago. In June, a picture of Kemp will adorn the front of the gum package. The brand, through a partnership with PLB Sports, a maker of athlete-endorsed food products, also has signed Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels.
Big day for Cole Hamels and Matt Kemp. It is not every day your agent calls you and tells you easily the best news a big leaguer could receive. Regardless of how the rest of your career goes, these two will always be able to tell their grandkids they were on a Big League Chew package. “Hey Grandpa Cole could you tell me about the World Series you won? I’ll get to that, but first have you ever had Groundball Grape?” Being on the front of a Big League Chew package is the biggest thing that could ever happen in a player’s career. Bigger than the World Series and even bigger than finding out you are in the next Backyard Baseball.
